The Lone Star State is known for its vast swaths of wide open space, but that doesn’t stop its cities from having some of the worst congestion in the country.
According to one recent study, Texans living in the state’s five biggest cities lose an average of 52 hours and $1,200 every year because of traffic.
“The major metro areas of Texas – Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio – represent more than two-thirds of the state’s population and 97 percent of the state’s most congested roads,”
said Texas Transportation Commissioner J. Bruce Bugg, Jr. in TexDOT press release.
Bugg heads a committee that recently unveiled a new statewide plan to help solve the traffic problem. If approved, the plan would allocate just over $1.3 billion for projects aimed at easing gridlock in Texas’ largest metro areas.
