After three and a half weeks, the armed occupation in Burns, Oregon came to an abrupt and violent end Tuesday night.

Two vehicles carrying Ammon Bundy (the leader of the occupation) and five of his followers were pulled over by FBI agents and Oregon State troopers as the occupiers headed up US Highway 395 en route to a community meeting.

The traffic stop was followed by a brief confrontation that left one of the occupiers dead, though it is unclear who fired first. The incident ended with the arrests of Ammon Bundy, his brother Ryan (who was injured during the shootout) and three others. Two more people with ties to the occupation were arrested in Burns around the same time.

Shortly after the arrests, federal agents moved in on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, which has served as headquarters for Bundy and his followers since they took it over on Jan. 2. It’s unclear, however, if any members of the occupation were there at the time.

CNN reports that all seven of the people arrested today face, “federal felony charges of conspiracy to impede officers of the United States from discharging their official duties, through the use of force, intimidation or threats.”
